Our Namesake
The Curtis Culwell Center holds a name dear to many in Garland, Texas, and beyond.
The facility received its title in honor of the legacy left behind by Curtis Culwell, a legendary figure who served the surrounding community for many years. Curtis Culwell began his career as an English teacher and coach in Garland ISD, and later as an assistant principal at both the middle and high school levels. Culwell moved to LaMarque and Lubbock, where he served in various roles until July of 1999 when he became the Superintendent of the Garland Independent School District. Dr. Culwell served as Superintendent for over a decade before retiring in December 2012.
Dr. Culwell led the charge for Garland to build its own special event and convention center, after many years of families being crowded into facilities at Southern Methodist University for events like graduations. Costing $39 million at the time of its construction in 2005, the building was and is a shining example of a state-of-the-art facility for special events, conferences, and more.
Before and after his retirement, Dr. Culwell championed students in several state and national organizations. A few include:
- Chairman of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Legislative Council
- President of the Texas School Alliance
- Board member for the 2010 State Board of Educator Certification
- Board member for the Dallas March of Dimes Board of Directors
In addition, Dr. Culwell was also involved in many other professional and civic organizations throughout the state. He was also recognized with the Bob Grossman Leadership in School Communications award by the National School Public Relations Association.
Of his time in Garland ISD, Dr. Culwell professed: “It has been one of the most significant privileges in my life to serve this district,” he said. “My affection for this institution and the people who comprise the GISD family is deep and encompasses a significant portion of my personal and professional life.”
We are proud to continue Dr. Culwell’s legacy at the Curtis Culwell Center.
